Artist Statement...

The idea of sentimentality has always intrigued me and made me question the power and fragility of the things we hold so dear to us throughout our lives. We often cherish our relationships with certain items and words as they are precious artefacts of valuable memories. They form a personal collection of irreplaceable treasures which we display in makeshift museums, such as shelves in our homes, shoeboxes under our beds or in our minds.

My work challenges this idea of sentimentality and how objects, as well as animals, can show aspects of our self and those around us in ways that are often overlooked. Using old objects and broken antiques, I create a world which invites the viewer to appreciate the boundaries beyond purpose, as the unusual animalistic forms reflect our own behaviours, feelings and experiences. My creations act as sculptural Fables that are my personal interpretation of the Folklore of sentimentality. My choice of animals depends on the object they are being formed from and the stories that reside in the aged markings of it’s past life and purpose.

"I love to create unique and quirky pieces that not only tell a story, but mean something to someone. I love the idea of artwork coming to life in animal-like ways and fulfilling more than its purpose. The objects I use in my work have had a past life, and to be able to give them a new life that brings joy to others is something truly special to me. Whether my artwork is showcased in galleries or in someone's home, I hope it brightens up someone's day."

Hello!

Welcome to the world of Ill-Fitting Fables, created by North Wales based artist Meg Howlett. Ill-Fitting Fables is all about transforming old, found objects and giving them a new life. There is something truly mysterious and magical about found objects that hold so many memories and character. Each Ill-Fitting Fables character is created from unique beloved objects and inspired by a different view on life's blessings and challenges. Like all good Fables, the characters each have strengths and weaknesses which are told through a unique way of storytelling. Unlike traditional Fables, the characters you'll find here are slightly Ill-Fitting to the norm.
